Jack's Lament from The Nightmare Before Christmas
Beautiful by MercyMe
(After you've read the verses at the top of this post, answer these questions. You can write them down in your Little Faith Book if you'd like!)
- What are these verses saying?
- What verse really stood out to you? Feel free to doodle it!
- Why do you think it's so hard for people to be themselves?
- Have you ever tried to act like someone you're not?
- How did God make you according to verse 14?
- Write out a prayer to God, thanking Him for handcrafting you with such intricacy and love.
Jack Skellington wasn't satisfied with his life. He wasn't happy with who he was and he longed to find something more than being the Pumpkin King. Through a series of events, he took extreme measures to become someone he wasn't meant to be, and ended up nearly ruining Christmas in the process.
I took two very important lessons away from this movie. First, so, so many people are unhappy with their lives. They may feel like “year after year, it's the same routine” and they “have grown so tired of the same old thing.” And instead of discovering their true purpose in Christ, they chase after worthless things that will never satisfy them.
Second, just like Jack, it's easy to see people who seem to have the perfect life and wish we could be like them. The popular girls at school, the Instagramer with the on fleek feed, the celebrity who's beautiful, rich and famous.
Guess what? God doesn't care about any of that stuff! You are not your looks, your Instagram pictures, your Snapchat story, your clothes or your possessions. These things don't define you and won't last for eternity. This is who you are—you are a child of the Most High King. God made you so wonderfully unique and complex, and He gave you a purpose that only YOU can fulfill. God made you just the way you are for a reason!
Now, this doesn't mean we shouldn't be improving and daily growing into the person God meant for us to be. If you're feeling stuck in the same old place like Jack, search for new opportunities to serve the Lord and grow closer to Him! But don't make the mistake of chasing after things that won't last and pretending to be someone you're not.
So whether you're a Pumpkin King or a Sandy Claws, God made you who you are for a reason and you can make a difference in this world by just being YOU.
