What would you do if you were called to something? Would you do it?
Moana felt like she was meant for something more, something big. She didn’t know why, but she wanted to go. The sea called her into dangerous ground; go beyond the reef? It was frowned upon and marked as unsafe.
Jonah also had a calling; he was God’s messenger. He delivered both good and bad news to people all over. Then God told him to go someplace dangerous. Nineveh? That place was also frowned upon and marked as unsafe.
Both Moana and Jonah were told to go somewhere that was going to take courage and obedience. The real difference is how they each reacted.
Moana took her calling and obeyed. She sailed across the sea to complete her mission. What did Jonah do? He sailed across the sea to run away. He ran from God, away from his calling, and away from the mission God had sent him on. It didn’t turn out so well for him until he made the choice to obey and follow God’s lead.
Looking at these two stories, it’s pretty obvious that following your call and obeying God are so important. The only question is: What is our calling, anyway?
Jesus tells us! He said in Matthew 28:19-20 and Mark 16:15 that our mission is to go into the world and tell others about Christ. This is what we were created and chosen to do. It’s a pretty simple mission, but one that people tend to get hung up on almost every day. So often people get caught up in trying to "tell" with their words instead of "telling" with their life. Actions speak louder than words and that will always be true. Jonah professed to be a God-honoring man, but God’s work through him stopped as soon as Jonah took matters into his own hands. God is faithful and He will use you to plant seeds in people’s lives. Just be patient and live out your life with Christ’s agenda first, not yours. Others will see that and want the same.
